Widerberg’s handling of materials has always been in response to the inherent qualities of their respective characteristics. The more intractable the stone, the greater the challenge to manipulate its surface, without losing sight of its inherent beauty. Traces of the chisel, the hammer and the polished or faceted areas allow exposed, rough, and abraded parts of the work to interact with the smooth.
When he talks about the process of ‘travelling into the stone’, this not only implies discovering the stone’s secret will, but in the figurative pieces, a life-giving process.
