“Modelling in clay, part of the process in making a bronze sculpture, is more like painting a picture. First, you build a steel armature which functions as a supporting core for the sculpture. The clay is then laid on and removed when necessary: you can work both ways which is distinct from working with stone. The sculpture is then cast in plaster before it is cast in bronze.
Modelling is a tranquil, reflective process and at times it feels good to be able to apply myself to that – in contrast to the noise and dust involved in stone carving.”
